7 Surface Treatment Methods for Machined Parts

7 Surface Treatment Methods for Machined Parts

In the rapid prototyping industry, a variety of surface treatment methods are used.

Surface treatment involves creating a layer with one or more special substances through physical or chemical methods. Surface treatment can enhance a product's appearance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, hardness, strength, and other properties.

1. As Machined

A machined surface is a common surface treatment. The surface of a part produced by CNC machining has a distinct machining pattern and a surface roughness of Ra0.2-Ra3.2. It is typically treated with deburring and sharp edge removal. This surface treatment is suitable for basiclly all materials.

2.Polishing

Polishing refers to a surface treatment method that uses mechanical, chemical or electrochemical effects to reduce the surface roughness of a workpiece to obtain a bright and smooth surface.

3.Sand blasting

Sand blasting is a that uses the impact of high-speed sand flow to clean and roughen the surface of the workpiece to achieve a certain degree of cleanliness and roughness.

4.Anodizing

Anodizing uses electrochemical oxidation of metals or alloys to form an oxide film on the surface of parts. This method protects parts from wear and oxidation, and enhances their aesthetics. The surface of the parts can be achieved in various colors. This surface treatment is only suitable for metal parts like aluminium and titanium.

5.Electroplating

Elenctroplating is a surface treatment that coats metal surfaces with a thin layer of other metal. This treatment prevents oxidation, improves wear and corrosion resistance, and enhances aesthetics. Parts can also be plated with zinc, copper, nickel, silver, or gold. This surface treatment is only suitable for metal parts.

6. Spray painting

Spray Painting sprays a layer of paint on the surface of the part. The color can be adjusted according to customer needs, and the surface can be matte, glossy, or metallic.

7. Brushing

Brushing is a surface treatment method that forms linear surface texture on the surface of the parts by grinding the product to achieve a decorative effect.
